GLOSSARY OF COMMONLY USED TELEVISION TERMS

AMPLITUDE
The voltage representation of a television picture.

BLACK LEVEL
The portion of the television waveform at blanking level
          representing black.

BURST
A locking signal for the color circuits comprising approximately
10 cycles of color subcarrier superimposed the back porch of
          horizontal sync.

COMPOSITE
A complete video waveform comprising of Sync, Blanking, Burst and
          picture information.

CHROMA
The color components of a picture modulated on a sub carrier.

COLOR BLACK
A signal at Black level containing Sync and Burst.

LUMINANCE
The black and white component of a television signal that carries
          all details of a scene.

LEVEL
          see "AMPLITUDE"

MODULATOR
A device to effect the amplitude or frequency of one signal in
          sympathy with a second signal.

MONITOR
A display device similar to a television, but with direct video
          input.

NTSC
A system for the encoding of color information on a black and
white picture used in the USA, Canada and Japan.

PAL
A system for the encoding of color information on a black and
white picture. Designed as a modification of NTSC by Germany to
reduce the effects of phase shifts. Used in Europe, England and
          Australia.

RESOLUTION
The number of vertical black and white lines that can be resolved
          through a system.

R.G.B.
The Red, Green and Blue video components from a camera, computer
etc that are combined and encoded to make a composite picture.

SYNC
The locking pulses supplied either separately or combined in a
composite picture to tell the following equipment when to start
a line of scan or a new vertical frame.

STANDARDS
The system adopted by the governing bodies in USA or Europe. For
use in the countries involved in standardization.

VECTORSCOPE
A piece of test equipment that displays on a screen the phase
angles and saturation of a color signal fed to it.

VIDEO
The picture information in voltage of a composite signal.

WAVEFORM
The representation of a video signal on a display device.
